宝月 巴

Age: 29
Gender: Female
Height: 168 cm
Occupation: Chief Prosecutor
Official Art

Head of the prosecutor's office and defendant of PW case 5.

Personality: Lana is strong, mature, and sure of herself - she takes her work very seriously and is very concerned about the well being of those close to her.

Misc Facts: Lana attended school with Mia Fey.

When Lana worked with Gant as a detective the two of them together were known as the "Legendary Duo."

Lana was designed wearing a military uniform to symbolize the strict confinement of the secrets in her heart (no, really).

The three medals Lana wears symbolize her winning the Prosecutor of the Year Award three times, according to GS staff. How that's possible when she was only a prosecutor for two years is not clarified.

Friends and Family: Lana has a younger sister, Ema. Their parents are deceased.

Name Origin:
English
: "Skye" is a reference to her Japanese name.

Japanese: The kanji in Houdzuki mean "treasured moon" or "jeweled moon."

Background: Lana and Ema's parents passed away when Ema was young, so Lana raised her young sister. She attended law school with Mia Fey, and later became a detective under Chief Gant. Together the two of them were known as the "Legendary Duo" who solved case after case.

Spoiler: 1-5
Two years before the game, the Joe Darke killings occurred (later referred to as case SL-9).  While Darke was being questioned by prosecutor Neil Marshall he escaped custody, and ran to the office Gant and Lana shared (where Ema was waiting for her sister).  A struggle ensued.

When Lana arrived at the scene, Neil was dead - he had been impaled by a suit of armor on Gant's side of the office.  Her sister and Darke were lying unconscious nearby.  On a broken pot, the name "Ema" had been written in blood.   Suspecting that her sister may have accidentally killed Neil during the struggle, Lana fixed the scene (with help from Gant) to make it look as though Darke had stabbed him with his switchblade.  Together, the "Legendary Duo" manipulated and hid evidence in order to get Darke convicted, and it worked.

The other detectives on the case realized that the evidence they recovered from the case did not match what Miles Edgeworth presented in court.  In order to keep them quiet Jake Marshall and Angel Starr were removed from their detective jobs.  Gant then had Lana transferred to the prosecutor's department, where she was named Chief Prosecutor.    Because Gant had kept some of the most damning evidence against Ema for himself, for the next two years Lana had to do exactly what he told her in order to keep her sister safe.  Having been named Chief of Police and with his pawn as Chief Prosecutor, Gant had obtained full power over the city's law enforcement.

Age: 16
Gender: Female
Height: 154 cm
Occupation: Student

Maya 2.0 - Phoenix's perky sidekick for PW case 5. Ema also appears in GS4, and you can see her new profile here.

Personality: Ema is cheerful, optimistic, and friendly. She has a great interest in the sciences and hopes to become a forensic investigator someday. She greatly admires her older sister, though they don't get along as much lately.

Misc Facts: Ema is a big fan of Prosecutor Edgeworth.

Friends and Family: Ema is Lana's younger sister. Their parents are deceased.

Name Origin:
English
: "Skye" is a reference to her Japanese name.

Japanese: The kanji in Houdzuki mean "treasured moon" or "jeweled moon." Her first name may come from the phrase akane sasu sora, meaning "a glowing sky."

Background: Because Ema's parents died when she was very young, she was raised by her older sister, Lana. She has studied to become a forensic investigator.

Spoiler: 1-5
Two years before the game, Ema came to the police station to wait for her sister Lana. She stayed in Lana's office (which Gant also shared). Meanwhile, Joe Darke was being questioned, and when a brief power outage allowed him to escape custody he came upon Ema in the office. He attacked her, but was quickly stopped by Neil Marshall. In the fight that followed Ema intervened, intending to push Darke off her protector. But in the dark of the office she mistook Neil for Darke, shoving him to the ground and knocking him unconscious (though not before Neil was able to knock Darke unconscious). She then passed out herself, and when she woke up, Neil was dead.

Ema was brought in to testify against Darke in court, which she did. He was found guilty and sentenced to death.

Damon Gant  / Kaiji Ganto / Damien Gant
巌徒 海慈

Age: 65
Gender: Male
Height: 185
Occupation: Chief of Police
Official Art

The eccentric chief of police in Rise from the Ashes.

Personality: Externally, Gant is usually cheerful and a strong leader of the police force, if not a bit eccentric. He calls most people by pet names, plays with his hair, and is prone to long, eerie pauses. Despite his oddities, however, he is a clever and calculating man who knows just how to get what he wants.

Misc Facts: Gant loves swimming, and suggests it often. He also has a huge organ in his office which, according to Gumshoe, is very loud when he plays.

Gant is character designer Kazuya Nuri's favorite character. He was modeled after Zeus.

Takumi said that when the script was first written they modeled Gant's character after their image of a television producer.

Friends and Family: Gant has no known family. But he used to work with Lana when they were both detectives, and were known as the "Legendary Duo."

Name Origin:
English: Gant was probably taken directly from his Japanese name. But, "le gant" also means "the glove" in French (thanks Eriolgal!)

Damon may come from "Dameon", which is a name often associated with evil (partially due to the old horror movie The Omen in which that was the name of the Devil's son).

Japanese: A fan suggested to me that the Japanese name (in terms of the kanji chosen) may come from an old Chinese saying along the lines of: "You can pick on the mountains, but don't pick on the sea [because the sea is merciless]." That it's almost Buddhist-sounding and is supposed to imply that he's all forgiving. Which...he's not! (Thanks Chiko Ri!)

I've also heard that it may be the Romanization of a foreign language word, but I'm not sure of what (other than le gant mentioned above).

French: Damien is the French equivalent of Damon (thanks Pizzadude!)

Background:

Spoiler: 1-5
Two years before the game Gant was a senior detective in charge of the Joe Darke investigation. Though Darke volunteered for questioning there was no decisive evidence linking him to the string of murders they suspected he had committed. During the question, which was being held by prosecutor Neil Marshall, the power briefly went out due to a thunderstorm, and Darke was able to escape custody. He fled to Gant's office, where he ran into Lana's young sister Ema. Neil chased him down and was able to knock Darke unconscious. But Ema, unable to see properly due to the power outage, thought Neil was Darke and shoved him to the ground. He was knocked unconscious, and soon after Ema passed out as well.

Gant was the first to find the scene, and immediately decided to work the events to his advantage. He murdered Neil Marshall by impaling him on a suit of armor in the office, and cut out a piece of his vest that bore Ema's fingerprints. He even wrote Ema's name on a pot at the scene with Neil's blood - everything to make it seem that Ema had killed him.

When Lana came to the scene, he knew what she would do - he helped her hide the evidence incriminating her sister (which he'd just planted!) and manipulated the scene again to make it look as though Darke had killed Neil by stabbing him in the back with a switchblade. They passed their faulty evidence on to the new prosecutor for the case, Miles Edgeworth, who earned Darke a guilty verdict and the death penalty.

Gant was promoted to Chief of Police for his efforts in getting Darke convicted. He then placed Lana as Chief Prosecutor, now that he was able to control her completely (since he still held incriminating evidence against Ema). By firing or transferring everyone else involved in the case he protected himself from discovery. And thus for those two years Damon Gant had complete power over city law enforcement.
